Irma Marco’s proposal stems from her video Are Smart Machines Alive?, a question inspired by several texts on human-machine interaction, such as Sherry Turkle’s The Second Self or Luciano Floridi’s The Onlife Manifesto. In this piece, the artist initiates a dialogue between the virtual assistants Cortana (Microsoft) and Siri (Apple), introducing questions drawn from these texts and playing with the misunderstandings and failed translations that occur when the programs process and respond to the information they receive. Within the framework of PLECS, the artist revisits this project to shape an online experiment that continues to interrogate the possibilities, errors, and limitations of technology.
