In this activation of #internetflags, Irma Marco incorporates a series of messages hand-painted in block letters and hung throughout the gallery space and on the balconies of Plaza Miracle del Mocadoret. Through these, she proposes a civic dialogue regarding the control of information and communications over the Internet: “A nuclear-proof method of communication”. Featuring quotes and nods to the history of the medium (Hello World) and popular culture (Dark Side of Social Media), Marco’s texts prompt reflection on Internet usage, its critical leverage by dissident movements (Anonymous Everywhere), and the rejection of network surveillance (Fuck off Google). As demonstrated during natural disasters and frequently used as a narrative device in film, if telephone lines, satellites, and television broadcasts were to collapse or an Internet blackout were to occur, people could still communicate over distances via radio—since its wireless system requires only a transmitter, a receiver, and electromagnetic waves. So, when nothing else works, radio will still keep us informed… Text: Ricardo Forriols.
